Which Are The Best Tiles For Flooring?

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Floor Tiles are an attractive and practical investment. The location to be tiled is just as important as the style you are looking at installing. Will it have heavy foot traffic, or is it a little nook in the corner of the house? Once you understand the location to be tiled, your journey into the world of flooring can begin.

Man-Made Tiles

Ceramic Tiles: Ceramic is generally more affordable and is available in a broad range of designs. Ceramic tends to be prone to chipping; however, they are hard-wearing and water resistant. Ceramic is softer and better suited to interior, low-traffic areas.

Porcelain Tiles: Porcelain is dense, smooth, and impenetrable. Its strength makes it suitable for all rooms, including outside living areas and the garden. They can be manufactured to resemble wood, terra cotta, natural stones, and even concrete.

Quarry Tiles: Quarry is made from a mixture of clays and fired at an extremely high temperature. They are unglazed and require sealing. Quarry is hard-wearing and durable, making them a perfect option for outdoor living spaces.

Terracotta Tiles: Terracotta is made from a mixture of clays, fired at a low temperature for a more rustic look. They are available in a range of shapes, sizes, and earthy colors. They need sealing.

Encaustic Tiles: Encaustic tiles are produced by layering different color clays to form a specific pattern and then fired in a kiln, as opposed to the design being on the surface and then glazed. They need regular sealing to help stop cracking but are otherwise hard-wearing.

Cement Tiles: Because of its porous nature, Cement can produce interesting patterns and textures over time. Cement can be stained to offer a range of colors. While they can be tricky to install, they are incredibly hard-wearing.

Quartz Tiles: Quartz, while a naturally occurring mineral, the tiles are manufactured. It is made from resin, quartz, sand, color pigment, and mirror flecks; they come highly polished.

Glass Tiles: Glass tiles are made from thin pieces of glass with a translucent glaze fired onto the back of each tile. Glass is prone to scratches and will break if something heavy is dropped on it.

Mosaic Tiles: Mosaics are small pieces of stone, porcelain, glass, and other materials glued together in various designs and patterns on a sheet and then grouted together.

Natural Stone Tiles

Stone Tiles: Stone has unique textures and tones. The elements and time hone their natural beauty. However, they may crack or scratch when placed in a heavily trafficked area.

Granite Tiles: Granite is one of the most durable. It’s very hard, available in many colors, and if sealed and polished, it can resist scratching.

Marble Tiles: Marble has a wide range of colors depending on where it is harvested from. It is porous and should be polished.

Limestone Tiles: Limestone comes in earthy shades and can be either textured or polished. It can stain and scratch, so avoid putting it in high-traffic areas.

Slate Tiles: Slate with its natural texture and tones can be durable and comes in a range of dark, earthy shades.

Travertine Tiles: Travertine has a naturally pitted surface and needs to be resealed regularly as it can scratch and stain.
